Part I: An Introduction
For those of you who do not know me all that well, allow me to introduce myself. I am the lead floral designer here at AJ F+D, and am completely obsessed with plants and flowers of any kind so I decided to start a blog about it! I recently got engaged to the most amazing person in the entire world, Cary, and we live in a loft in Grant Park. We share our home with our two cats - Isis (I know it's unfortunate) and Velvet, the retired showcat and of course our plants. Don't worry, I included photos of the cats too.
Growing up, my mother taught me how to care for plants both indoors and out. She's the stem of my obsession, but at some point I started teaching her about plants. Funny how that happens! I grew up in downtown Macon in the middle of the city, but my parents made sure we always had a vegetable and flower garden in our backyard. I worked in that garden planting vegetables and harvesting them even when I had company over for the weekend. My mom and dad were a little hardcore sometimes when it came to chores but I can totally appreciate that now. They definitely instilled an appreciation for the outdoors and nature which has carried over into my adult life and obviously into my home. Aside from my houseplants, I am on the steering committee for my community garden in Grant Park where I have a small plot to grow organic vegetables. There is something about growing your own food that is super satisfying. From watching a seed sprout to the moment when you get to pick the first fruit off the branch is pretty amazing. At the Grant Park Community Garden, we not only have personal plots but also have community plots where we grow organic produce to donate to the hungry. Our little garden has given so much back to the Atlanta community and I am just glad I can be a small part of it.
I've been working with Amanda (world's best boss in case she's reading) for a little over two years now and really couldn't ask for a better place to walk into everyday. If you've had the chance to drop by our studio, you've seen a tame example of my obsession, but I thought I'd share a glimpse into my home where my real collection lives. Many of you have asked me for plant advice over the years, so I figured why not share my knowledge about houseplants and how to take care of them.
I'll be talking not only about how to care for houseplants in general but also anything plant or botanical related. I'll be discussing that elephant in the room, also known as the dang fiddleleaf fig that everyone seems to want but no one knows how to keep alive. Also, how to incorporate house plants in a wedding design and many more things! Is there anything you want or need to know more about specifically? I just want to share my obsession with you so that you become confident enough to go out there and buy all those plants you've always wanted but never known how to care for.
My super talented friend and photographer Natalie Jackson of Four Corners Photography came over a couple of weeks ago and captured some fun photos of our little space. She knew I had an obsession, but I don't think she quite expected to see the jungle that we have crafted in our little loft in the middle of the city. Below you will find a sneak peak into our urban jungle - hope you enjoy!
